The national park is home to many animal species. From the alpine ibex, the red deer, the dormouse, the fox, the roe deer and the chamois. The chamois is also known as the main character of the famous folk Legend of the Golden Horn.

Many rare European bird species find shelter in the park’s rich landscape.
Leafy and coniferous forests, meadows, and a bare rock environment are ideal for nesting. Some forest and mountain birds can be observed throughout the year, while other you can only see during specific seasons. The most prevalent birds to be spotted are woodpeckers, owls, mountain eagles, buzzards, wood grouse and ruffed grouse.
