Autumn in Bohinj: things to do, hikes & weather

Experience autumn in Bohinj at its quietest: golden forests, clear air and uncrowded trails by Lake Bohinj in Triglav National Park. Below you’ll find the best things to do, autumn hikes and viewpoints, and practical weather tips for September, October and November.

Bohinj in September, October & November – weather and tips

  • September

Usually the mildest autumn month in the valley. Good for lake walks, hiking and the first autumn colours. Evenings can already feel cool.

  • October

Often the most colourful period around the lake and forests, but conditions vary from year to year. Expect cooler mornings, more rain and rapidly changing mountain weather.

  • November

Much quieter and colder. Short days, misty mornings and possible winter conditions at higher elevations make lower-level walks the safer choice on many days.

Mountain conditions can be very different from those by the lake. Always check the forecast and current trail conditions before heading higher into the Julian Alps.

  • What to pack

Layers, a warm mid-layer, waterproof outerwear, proper walking or hiking shoes, and a small daypack. For longer autumn hikes, carry a headlamp and check conditions before leaving.

Best things to do in Bohinj in autumn

Autumn changes the rhythm of Bohinj. The busiest summer weeks are over, mornings by the lake become quieter, and the forests around Ukanc begin to turn. It is a beautiful time to explore the lake, waterfalls and lower mountain trails at a slower pace.

  • Hike to Mostnica Gorge or Savica Waterfall surrounded by fall colours
  • Take the panoramic boat between Ukanc and Ribčev Laz — autumn services run on a reduced timetable, typically until early November.
  • Enjoy scenic hikes in Bohinj in October with fewer tourists and clear air
  • Visit local farms and try Bohinj cheese, honey, and herbal teas
  • If you’re visiting in September 2026, the traditional Cows’ Ball festival takes place in Ukanc on 20 September — just steps from Privillage Stare.
  • Take the Vogel cable car for panoramic views in early September — always check current operating dates before your visit.

Why autumn is one of the best times to visit Bohinj

After the busy summer weeks, Bohinj settles into a quieter rhythm. Forests around the lake change colour, mornings can begin with mist above the water, and familiar paths feel noticeably more peaceful. At the western end of the lake in Ukanc, this change is especially tangible — from quiet walks straight from the village to evenings back by the fire or in your private wellness space.

Why stay in Ukanc in autumn

  • Golden-yellow forests & mirror-still mornings on the lake
  • Warm saunas after hikes; fireplaces & cozy evenings
  • Quieter trails, slower mornings and more space around the lake
  • Perfect for couples, slow travellers and anyone needing a reset

Stay at the quiet end of Lake Bohinj this autumn

As summer fades and Bohinj grows quieter, Privillage Stare becomes a peaceful base for an autumn escape at the western end of the lake. Choose the privacy and space of our Alpine Luxury Villa or retreat to the Alpine SPA Chalet for your own sauna, massage bathtub and evenings by the fireplace.

For an earlier autumn stay, our Country House B&B offers quiet mornings with breakfast before a day outdoors.

Come recharge in the silence of Triglav National Park and experience a slower side of Lake Bohinj.
